Health Tooth Tips
| Wipe your baby’s gums with a wet washcloth after feeding especially before bed | |
| Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle | |
| Start brushing 2x/day with a soft bristled toothbrush once the first tooth appears | |
| Start flossing 1x/day any teeth that are touching — it’s easier than you think! | |
| Choose water instead of juice or soda | |
| Limit between meal snacking, especially on sugary or sticky foods | |
| Choose xylitol (gum, mints, candy, wipes, or gel) | |
| Team brushing & flossing until age 7 (being able to tie their own shoes is a good indication independent brushing) |
What Causes Cavities
The main culprit behind tooth decay is bacteria a.k.a “sugar bugs!” Feeding bacteria more than 3-4x their favorite food of carbohydrates (both healthy and unhealthy—bacteria do not discriminate) will allow the bacteria to produce acid that will break down your teeth.
| Carbs | + | Bacteria | = | Acid |
| Acid | + | Healthy Tooth | = | Cavity! |

These bacteria can be passed on to others through saliva just like cold germs can!
Please don’t share cups, forks, spoons, or toothbrushes to avoid getting more bacteria.
